How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
Use Apple's Duplicates album for exact copies, then review near-identical photos separately. The two groups need different decisions and should not be deleted in one uncontrolled batch.

Then review photos that look alike
Near-identical photos are not necessarily duplicates. One may have better focus, a different expression, an edit, a favorite flag, or a composition you prefer.

No automated suggestion understands the personal meaning of every image. Review each important group and treat the suggested keeper as guidance.
Does merging duplicates free space immediately?
Redundant files normally move to Recently Deleted, so the space may not be fully reclaimed until those items are permanently removed.
