How to delete duplicate photos on iPhone
Use Apple's Duplicates album for exact copies, then review near-identical photos separately. The two groups need different decisions and should not be deleted in one uncontrolled batch.

Quick answer
In Photos, open Collections or Albums, find Utilities, and choose Duplicates. Review each group and use Merge when appropriate. For repeated poses, bursts, blurry attempts, and visually similar shots that are not exact duplicates, use a comparison workflow such as Cleanzly and confirm the keeper yourself.
Use the built-in Duplicates album first
The Photos app can detect duplicate photos and videos after the phone has had time to analyze the library. The Duplicates section may not appear immediately on a new phone or directly after a large import.
When you merge a group, iOS keeps a single item while combining useful metadata and moving redundant copies to Recently Deleted. Review important groups individually before confirming them.
Then review photos that look alike
Near-identical photos are not necessarily duplicates. One may have better focus, a different expression, an edit, a favorite flag, or a composition you prefer.
Cleanzly groups similar photos and proposes a keeper using visual and library signals. Compare the full group, zoom into faces and fine detail, and override the suggestion whenever another photo matters more to you.
- Keep edited and favorited versions unless you intentionally replace them.
- Check Live Photos for a better key frame or useful motion.
- Compare faces, text, and low-light detail at full size.
- Do not bulk-delete photos from important events without a backup.
Finish with screenshots and large media
Screenshots are often easier to review by month or purpose. Remove old tickets, temporary references, repeated conversations, and images that contain sensitive information you no longer need.
After cleanup, check Recently Deleted. Leave files there during a safety period, or empty the album only after confirming your kept library and backup.
Common questions
Why is the Duplicates album missing?
The iPhone may still be analyzing the library, or no qualifying duplicates have been found. Keep the phone locked and connected to power for a while, then check again.
Are similar photos safe to delete automatically?
No automated suggestion understands the personal meaning of every image. Review each important group and treat the suggested keeper as guidance.
Does merging duplicates free space immediately?
Redundant files normally move to Recently Deleted, so the space may not be fully reclaimed until those items are permanently removed.
